SEO Update: Updates to Google My Business, Google Penalizing Deceitful Mobile Redirects, ‘Related Topics’ Added to Featured Snippets

Google recently released its third iteration of the ‘My Business’ API, further helping businesses with multiple locations automate their listings management. This update includes the option to choose preferred photos for each listing and add specific attributes, such as whether a location serves brunch or has a patio. These new features will be very useful for brands with many locations and will allow businesses to appear based on long tail queries such as “central rooftop bars”. Meanwhile, Google reiterated that websites could face penalties for redirecting towards spammy domains. This is a follow-up to their October 2015 announcement and could be a warning to webmasters that manual actions are to be expected in the coming months. Lastly, Google has extended feature snippets and will now show ‘related topics’ underneath search queries. This isn’t a huge update, but it does confirm Google’s aim to be able to answer a user’s query within the SERP, which could lead to sites receiving less traffic from interrogative searches.
